What is Form I-131?
If you’re a Green Card holder, applying for adjustment of status, or have refugee/asylee status, Form I-131 might be the key to traveling outside the U.S. without jeopardizing your immigration status.
At 123 Citizen, our mission is to help you understand exactly what this form does, when you might need it, and how to file it confidently.
What is Form I-131 For?
Form I-131, Application for Travel Document, is used to request official permission to re-enter the United States after traveling abroad. Depending on your immigration status and needs, it can be used to apply for:
1. Re-entry Permit
For lawful permanent residents or conditional permanent residents who need to travel outside the U.S. for an extended period (typically up to two years).
A re-entry permit helps you return without having to apply for a returning resident visa at a U.S. consulate.
📌 Important: You must be physically present in the U.S. when you file your application and complete biometrics before leaving.
2. Refugee Travel Document
For refugees or asylees, or Green Card holders who obtained that status through refugee/asylee status.
This document is required for re-entry to the U.S. after travel abroad unless you have Advance Parole.
📌 Tip: Always apply before leaving the U.S., as applying from abroad is risky and may delay your return.
3. Advance Parole
For individuals in the process of adjustment of status or with other eligible statuses (such as Temporary Protected Status). Advance Parole allows you to re-enter the U.S. without a visa for a specific purpose, like visiting family or attending an event.
📌 Note: This is not a replacement for your passport, and entry is never guaranteed — you remain an “applicant for admission” until inspected and admitted by a CBP officer.
When Should You File Form I-131?
Filing timelines depend on your travel needs, but in most cases:
You must file and receive approval before leaving the U.S.
Refugees/asylees and adjustment of status applicants should never travel without their travel document in hand.
Green Card holders applying for a re-entry permit should file as early as possible before their planned trip.
